How Solar PV works

How Solar PV works Sunlight reaches the solar panels. The electricity they generate is used in the home or business, stored in a battery, or exported to the grid. Sunlight Solar panels Home or business Battery storage Grid

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used in the home or business straight away, stored in a battery for later use, or exported to the grid.

Solar PV: frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

You may need planning permission, although most domestic properties would not. It makes good sense to contact your local council and check in advance. Commercial and industrial installations would need to get permission. The government’s Planning Portal has more information and advice.

How long does installation take?

A domestic installation usually takes two to three days, although the scaffold may be on site for longer.

What maintenance does a system need?

Usually dust and dirt washes off when it rains. Under no circumstances should abrasive materials or detergents be used to clean the panels.
